Trophy trauma for Terras

BRENDON King accused his players of letting themselves down
after Saturday’s FA Trophy exit at the hands of Alfreton
Town.
Prior to the game the Weymouth boss felt his side had a chance
of causing an upset but on the day the gulf in class was huge
as the Conference outfit ran out 6-0 winners in front of a
bumper crowd at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
King told Echosport: “The players let themselves down
and to say we are disappointed is an understatement.
“We are a lot better than that but you cannot defend
like we did against a side like that in the league they are
in and get away with it.
“We gave them too much time and got punished –
it was as simple as that.”
The Reds raced out of the blocks and scored three goals in
the opening 25 minutes before adding two more before the break.
To their credit, Weymouth then put up some resistance in
the second half but Town still managed to knock one more in
with 13 minutes remaining.
King added: “Everything went out of the window in the
first 12 minutes. We had a game plan but unfortunately it
was not given time to work.
“They were decent going forward and were a lot sharper
than us. They were quicker to the ball, physically stronger
and at times it was like men against boys.
“It was a shame because we have had a good run in the
competition this year but perhaps this was just one step too
far.”
King’s focus has now turned to ensuring survival in
the Evo-Stik Southern Premier.
The Terras currently sit 14th in the table, 11 points off
the play-offs and eight above the drop-zone with games in
hand on most of the sides around them.
King said: “It is important we do not dwell on this
result and lift ourselves now for next Sunday at Evesham United.
“Our remit at the start of the season was to stay up
and we are eight to 10 points away from doing that.
“That is the main aim now and hopefully we can achieve
that sooner rather than later.
“Consistency is the name of the game and if we can find
that I have no doubts we would be a top-six side in this league
but the lads are young and still learning.
“It’s all about 11 players being on top of their
games and unfortunately in the last two matches we have not
had that and were duly punished.”
When asked whether the FA Trophy exit could mean the end
of any hopes of bringing James Coutts back on loan from AFC
Totton, King went on to say: “That is something we have
to look at now. Had we gone through we would have obviously
had more money to do that but I shall have a chat with the
board and see where we go from here.”
