Time for Terras to buck up
By Adam Summers

Thursday 30th September 2010

CAMERON Mawer has told the Terras they must stop letting the club down and start “producing the goods” on a consistent basis.

The stand-in skipper believes the time has come for the Weymouth ranks to deliver on their potential and start getting results after flattering to deceive in their opening 10 games of the campaign, which have heralded just two victories and three draws.

The latest setback for the Terras came in last Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Swindon Supermarine where an abject display saw them crash out of the FA Cup at the second qualifying round stage.

Mawer insists there are no excuses for such a performance and is urging his team-mates to buck up their ideas ahead of this Saturday’s trip to fourth-placed Chesham United in the Zamaretto Premier Division where they sit nine points adrift of safety at the bottom of the table.

Commenting on the loss at the Webbs Wood Stadium, Mawer said: “I cannot put my finger on why we played like that. The previous week we matched league leaders Cambridge City but on Saturday we just never got going.

“I am not sure whether some of the boys took it for granted that we would just turn up at Supermarine and win, but whatever the reason it was very disappointing, as it would have been nice to have gone on a run in the competition for the club.

“With the financial restraints we have and the 10-point deduction at the start of the season, it was always going to be a hard job and Ian Hutchinson and Andy Mason are doing all they can to get us moving in the right direction.

“They have brought in some good players and are preparing us right for every game but now it is up to us players to go out there and not let them and the fans down.

“We have shown good potential within games but the time has come now to start producing the goods for the full 90 minutes every time we go out there, and that is what we all need to work towards.”

Mawer believes the key to better results is adopting a stronger mentality. He added: “I am the kind of person that gives his all whenever he plays.

“It doesn’t matter what role I am asked to carry out. I will always put everything on the line to do it to the best of my ability, and that is all the gaffer is asking of us.

“I also see it as my job to push the younger players on and help them take on more responsibility.

“The fact we lost 10 points at the start of the season was nobody’s fault and I think some of the lads need to start putting that to one side now and instead concentrate on producing the goods in each and every game.

“I think at times we have been unlucky. We have played well in games and not always got what we deserved but there is no use in feeling sorry for ourselves.

“Against Cambridge and at Salisbury City, we proved we can match the best teams in the league but we must start producing those performances week in, week out.

“There is no use in just raising our game against the big sides. We need to do the same against the lesser teams as well, and make sure we are on it every time we go out there.”

When asked what impact Courtney Pitt and new signing Rob Wolleaston can have on the Terras’ fortunes, Mawer was defiant in his view. He said: “Courtney and Rob are going to prove massive players for us.

“Both of them have so much quality and once they get match-sharp they will make a big difference but it is up to all of us to take responsibility, and if we do that I am confident the results will come and we will start climbing the table.”
