Gill: Terras gave me their all
By Ky Capel

Monday 22nd February 2010

JERRY Gill revealed he “could not have asked any more” from his players in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at play-off chasing Bath City.

The Terras entered the game on the back of a 6-0 hammering at the hands of Basingstoke Town but stood firm for 74 minutes at Twerton Park – even surviving a first-half penalty which was put wide by Darren Edwards – until an Adam Connolly free-kick broke their resistance.

Edwards then atoned for his earlier miss by netting the Romans’ second within 60 seconds, after being teed up by ex-Terra Hector Mackie, and it was game over for Gill’s troops.

However, the Weymouth boss was more than impressed with his side’s efforts.

He said: “It was much better than the previous Saturday and the Bath manager was very complimentary afterwards.

“The crowd was starting to get on their backs, I couldn’t see them scoring but then a quality free-kick beat us. They had a dubious penalty in the first half but that didn’t go in so it’s irrelevant.

“The work ethic and togetherness of our players was much better and they all put in a real shift, so they shouldn’t be too down.

“We’re disappointed to lose and I’m not accepting defeat, but you have to look at the bigger picture and there were a lot more positives than the previous week – I could not have asked any more from the lads.

“The performance was there but the result has not followed, however, if we can keep putting in the performances then the results will come.

“I want us to be hard to beat and we were on Saturday. The lads know what I expect and they showed that in abundance. We deserved something but that’s football for you.”

Gill also paid tribute to keeper Tim Sandercombe, who endured a nightmare debut against Basingstoke.

He added: “Not all of last week’s goals were down to him. Confidence is important with keepers and I thought he was terrific for us on Saturday. I backed him all week and he showed good character.”

The Terras remain rooted to the foot of Blue Square South, eight points clear of safety with 13 fixtures still to play.

And next on the agenda for Weymouth is a home clash with Braintree Town tomorrow night, in which fans will receive free admission.

Gill said: “I’m not daft, I know games are running out. We’ve just got to try and gets as many points as we can.”

* A minute’s applause was held prior to kick-off in memory of former Weymouth and Bath City boss Brian Godfrey.
