Terras deliver a Trophy treat
By Adam Summers
WARREN Byerley bagged a hat-trick as Weymouth ran riot at the
Bob Lucas Stadium last night to move into the third qualifying
round of the FA Trophy.
The Terras, who ended up with 10 men after Richard Marshallsay
picked up a needless red card in the second half, went four
up in the first 37 minutes as they ripped apart a Thatcham side
that paid the price for an exceedingly slow start.
Despite the return of Craig Duff from a three-match suspension,
Terras boss Brendon King kept faith with the same starting
XI that began Saturdays eventful 1-1 draw at Waterside
Park.
The all-action midfielder had to be content with a place on
the bench for the replay where he joined Marsh-allsay, Chris
Luke, Mitch Conning and reserve-team stopper Chris Povall, who
came in for the injured Nick Jordan.
Sam Tucker and Gareth Thomas, who were both sent off in the
first meeting between the two sides, retained their places in
the That-cham line-up, which once again set up 4-5-1 in a bid
to contain their higher league opponents.
Heavy drizzle ensured a slick playing surface and within two
minutes the hosts were in front.
Paul Taplins poor defensive header fell to Byron Napper
on the edge of the area and he played in Sam Malsom, who broke
into the box and fired a low drive through Paul Strudleys
legs from an acute angle.
It was the perfect start for the Terras and they were soon on
the offensive again with Byerley curling an effort just wide
of the left upright from 20 yards.
Napper and Stephen Reed were beginning to orchestrate the game
and on 15 minutes only a sharp double save by Strudley denied
Ben Gerring and Byerley as Weymouth continued to search for
a second.
Jamie Beasley was also looking lively down the left and it was
his hanging cross on 18 minutes that led to Malsom completing
his brace after Strudley had spilled the ball under pressure
at the far post.
For the opening 20 minutes Thatcham had looked a yard slower
than their opponents all over the pitch and when they did get
possession it often resulted in a hopeful punt in a bid to get
behind the home defence.
However, they persevered and moments later they created their
first opening when Tucker drove into the left-hand side of the
box, only to see his effort blocked by the lunging Sam Poole.
It appeared the visitors were finally beginning to settle but
on 28 minutes they conceded a third when Beasleys speculative
30-yarder slipped through Strudleys gloves at the foot
of his near post.
The visiting keeper was clearly experiencing an evening to forget
but his opposite number Tom Manley was not having such problems
as he tipped over a long-range strike from Taplin to the appreciation
of the home crowd.
Byerley then saw a sensational bicycle kick blocked by Matt
Bowler before somehow failing to convert a cross from Malsom
from a couple of yards after Stephen Reeds initial 25-yard
strike had been parried by Strudley.
However, the Weymouth front man did not have to wait much longer
for another chance, which eventually saw him net with a stooping
header on 37 minutes with the impressive Malsom once again the
provider.
To their credit, Thatcham replied with decent attempts from
Mark Hughes and Taplin before the break in a bid to grab a lifeline
but the Terras still looked comfortable despite having to replace
Gerring with Duff due to a persistent foot injury.
Napper dropped into the back four as a result of the switch
and although Weymouths display dropped a notch in the
opening stages of the second half the visitors were unable to
capitalise.
Beasley sent a shot wide for the Terras on the hour mark but
that was the only action of note until Marshallsay tangled twice
with Hughes and got himself sent off.
The pair got in a shoving match on 70 minutes and justifiably
received a caution each before the home midfielder then left
a foot in on the Thatcham full-back just three minutes later
which saw him receive his marching orders.
That gave Town a lease of life but Manley continued to be the
barrier, pulling off a fine point-blank stop to deny Thomas,
who then chopped down Duff with nine minutes remaining for a
stonewall penalty.
Byerley stepped up to the spot and fired his penalty into the
left corner of the net before Sam Flegg then eventually beat
the impressive Manley to pull one back with five minutes remaining.
However, that was still not the end of the drama as Byerley
completed his hat-trick at the second attempt to grab Weymouths
sixth.
There was even time for Thatcham to hit the woodwork twice in
the space of a couple seconds through Tom Etheridge and Jemel
Johnson before the tie eventually came to a close.
