Terras rocked in last minute
By Adam Summers

WEYMOUTH had to settle for a point at the Bob Lucas Stadium last night after surrendering a two-goal lead against Swindon Supermarine.

Sam Malsom and Warren Byerley put the hosts in front before Ashley Edenborough and Nick Stanley replied with the latter’s equaliser coming in the very last minute.

Terras’ boss Brendon King made two changes to his starting XI with a half-fit Nick Jordan and Craig Duff coming in for Tom Manley and Jamie Beasley, who dropped to the bench.

Manley suffered a head injury in the 2-1 victory at Hemel Hempstead Town on Saturday and was clearly rested as a precaution while rookie keeper Chris Povall was unavailable through suspension.

New acquisition Seb Broomfield was also included among the home substitutes. The Dorchester Town forward recently joined the club on a month’s loan deal.

Swindon Supermarine entered the game on the back of a three-game winning streak in all competitions and they nearly took the lead after just six minutes when Bradley Gray somehow headed wide from close range following a fine cross from Danny Allen.

Needless to say, King was furious about the lack of marking and immediately let his feelings known from the home dugout as the visitors continued to look a yard sharper all over the pitch.

The Terras needed a lift and it was in-form Malsom that provided it on 19 minutes with a trademark run across the box which ended with Duff sending a wild shot wide of the target.

That was followed by a glorious cross from Stephen Reed and although Warren Byerley was flagged offside at the far post it finally appeared like the Terras were beginning to find some sort of rhythm.

Gray and Kyle Lapham both tested Jordan from distance at the other end but Weymouth continued to slowly build momentum and took the lead on 28 minutes when Scott Dixon’s cool pass out of defence sent Malsom on his way.

The fleet-footed winger wasted no time in leaving his marker for dead before letting fly with a stunning strike from 30 yards which changed direction in the air and completely bamboozled visiting keeper Ken Kauppinen before finding the net.

Weymouth were now in full flow and moments later they nearly added a second through a wonderful team move. Once again it was Malsom that had the final strike from 18 yards but this time Kauppinen made a fine save to his right before going on to thwart Byerley’s attempted rebound.

Supermarine were still working hard but the hosts clearly carried the bigger threat with Byerley stretching the visiting defence on two more occasions before the break.

First, he raced clean through, only to get the ball stuck under his own feet at the vital moment, and then he sent an angled drive just wide of the far post, much to the relief of the Swindon bench.

However, it took just 30 seconds of the second half for that relief to turn to despair as Weymouth finally doubled their advantage from a corner.

Reed’s cross was again right on the money and when Ben Gerring headed the ball towards the target there was Byerley to net his eighth league goal of the season from just a yard out.

The hosts were now looking comfortable but just six minutes later they went to sleep at the back and paid the price when Gray broke in behind Scott Dixon on the right and crossed for Edenborough to reduce the deficit from close range.

It was a soft goal to concede and it gave Supermarine a huge boost with skipper David Bampton sending a glancing header across the face of Jordan’s goal just a couple of minutes later.

The Terras responded by bringing on Broomfield for Groves in a bid to freshen up their attack but Swindon continued to test the home nerves with Jordan being forced to push a cross-cum-shot on to the bar after Allen had found space down the left.

As the game moved into its closing stages the visitors continued to ask questions before Jordan aggravated the hamstring injury that had initially made him a doubt for the game with five minutes remaining.

The delay for treatment caused the hosts to switch off and in the final minute Supermarine levelled through Stanley with an emphatic strike into the right corner of the net to snatch a deserved point.
