Lacklustre loss for Terras
By Adam Summers
WEYMOUTH got what they deserved at the Bob Lucas Stadium on
Saturday absolutely nothing.
Warren Byerley and Craig Duff both netted late goals for the
hosts but the final scoreline flattered the Terras, who were
lacklustre throughout.
Brendon King made two changes to the side that started Tuesday
nights 2-2 draw with Swindon Supermarine with Tom Manley
and Jamie Beasley coming in for the injured Nick Jordan and
Matt Groves, who was named amongst the substitutes.
Manley missed the midweek stalemate due a head injury he picked
up the previous weekend at Hemel Hempstead Town.
Groves demotion to the bench saw Beasley partner Warren
Byerley up front as the Terras kept faith with 4-4-2 but it
was Redditch that made the more positive start.
The visitors, who came into the game having claimed just one
point from a possible 21 on the road, forced Weymouth on to
the back-foot in the opening couple of minutes but were unable
to take advantage of some tentative defending.
Twice the Reds got in behind the home backline but no one was
able to get on the end of the final ball across the box before
Manley tidied up.
King was clearly not happy with his sides lethargic start
but not even his booming voice from the dugout could wake them
from their slumber.
They needed a pick-me-up and just like against Supermarine it
was Malsom that tried to provide it on 14 minutes when he got
on the end of a fine cross from Duff, only to see his first-time
effort strike the base of the far post.
Despite that near miss the Terras continued to look laboured
and they paid the price on 28 minutes when Uniteds endeavour
was rewarded with an absolute screamer.
A hopeful cross was half cleared to the edge of the box by Weymouths
dithering defence and that enabled Walsall loanee Connor Deards
to turn and unleash an emphatic half-volley into the top-left
corner of the net.
Beasley responded by heading over a cross from Ollie Tribe on
36 minutes but his partnership with Byerley was having very
little impact.
It was proving a half to forget for the home side and the icing
on that particular cake arrived in added time when the Reds
grabbed a second.
Still looking a shambles, the Terras defence appeared
to stand like statues as James Travis lofted the ball through
to James Deabill who went on to beat Manley with consummate
ease.
Unfortunately for the home fans not much changed after the break.
King sent out the same side in the hope they would make amends
but their subdued nature continued and was duly punished again
on the hour.
Sam Pooles aimless clearance hit the back of Byron Napper
and when the ball fell 10 yards out, Joe Halsall showed the
presence of mind to hook it past Manley with a fine overhead
kick.
Frustration then began to kick in amongst the Weymouth ranks
with Beasley and Poole both going into the book in quick succession
with the latter lucky not to see a second yellow card shortly
after for a foul just outside the box.
Referee Pete Lavelle certainly went to his pocket but then changed
his mind once he had identified the culprit.
Stephen Reed blazed a shot over and sent a free-kick just off
target in a desperate bid to give his side a lifeline but Redditch
remained comfortable with keeper Dean Coleman revelling in his
role as a spectator.
Ryan McKechnie, Seb Broomfield and Mitch Conning were all introduced
for the Terras and after Deards had tested Manley twice, the
hosts pulled one back from the spot with four minutes remaining.
Byerley was tugged back at the far post by Halsall and he stepped
up to beat Coleman with a crisp penalty.
Duff then grabbed another back in added time after a knock down
at a free-kick but not even those two late goals could hide
the fact the Terras had been poor for the majority of the afternoon.
