Terras stun leaders with late Brake-through
By Adam Summers
THE Bob Lucas Stadium was rocking at full-time on Saturday after
Weymouth pulled off an incredible late comeback to topple league
leaders Leamington. An encouraging crowd of 622 watched on in
disbelief in the dying stages as two goals in the final four
minutes turned the tables on the visitors, who had been on top
for long periods of the game.
Jacob Blyth thought he had won it for the Brakes when he
fired home from the spot in the 87th minute but Warren Byerley
then equalised with a penalty of his own just moments later,
before Craig Duff headed the winner deep into added-time.
Following three years of doom and gloom both on and off the
pitch, days like this at Weymouth appeared to be a thing of
the past but it seems the good times are slowly returning.
Boss Brendon King certainly appears to have the Midas touch
at present and for the third game in succession he kept faith
with the same starting XI with Stephen Reed once again having
to settle for a spot on the bench.
Leamington made the brighter start but the Terras defended
well for the most part.
Richard Batchelor tested Tom Manley from long range and Scott
Dixon made a vital block to turn a strike from Asa Charlton
out for a corner but apart from that the hosts remained untroubled.
However, they struggled to maintain possession at times and
it was not until the 43rd minute that they finally made headway
at the other end.
Lewis Taskers free-kick into the box was headed down
by Ben Gerring at the far post and there was Duff to turn
the ball into the net from eight yards.
The Brakes were stunned but a raised flag from the eagle-eyed
assistant at that end of the pitch soon saved them.
Referee Adam Penwell had seen nothing wrong but after consulting
his fellow official he ruled out the effort and booked Duff
for using his hand, which the midfielder later owned up to.
After the break, Leamington continued to look the better
side with Manley producing two fine saves to deny David Koldynski
before Stephan Morley broke into the box and saw his low drive
roll agonis-ingly wide of the far post.
Reed was introduced for Tasker on 64 minutes but the away
side carried on knocking at the door with Michael Tuohy striking
the outside of a post with a stunning half-volley from 30
yards before a bad injury to Jamie Hood finally offered the
Terras some respite.
The defender had to be stretchered off and it immediately
disrupted the Brakes rhythm with the unfortunate Byerley
heading a pinpoint cross from Sam Malsom on to the crossbar
with 11 minutes remaining.
The game had now become stretched and on 87 minutes some
desperate defending by the Terras ended with substitute Luke
Corbett taking a tumble in the box after a brush with Gerring.
The forward appeared to take a couple of steps before finally
deciding to go down but Penwell was convinced enough to point
to the spot, allowing Blyth to break the dead-lock.
Many teams would have capitulated after that setback but
Kings men poured forward and three minutes later their
incredible efforts were rewarded when Gerring went down under
a challenge by Morley, giving the man in the middle another
huge decision to make.
Once again it looked a bit soft but Penwell put the whistle
to his lips and Byerley sent Lee Evans the wrong way with
the resulting pen-alty.
The home fans went wild, but better was yet to come with
Duff going on to grab the winner with a sublime header from
Reeds pinpoint cross, which took the roof off in the
fourth minute of added-time.
