King’s men survive late Hemel rally
By Adam Summers

A LATE rearguard action ensured the Terras clung on to all three points at Vauxhall Road on Saturday despite having an extra man for the majority of the encounter.

Basement boys Hemel Hempstead lost Charlie Gorman to a straight red card after just 10 minutes but their never-say-die attitude made it a tough afternoon for the visitors, who were below par for much of the contest.

Weymouth kept faith with the same starting XI that began the midweek victory over Thatcham Town in the FA Trophy with Craig Duff once again having to settle for a spot on the bench where he was joined by the returning Ryan McKechnie.

Chris Povall was also included in the squad again due to Nick Jordan’s ongoing hamstring injury, while Richard Marshallsay missed out altogether.

Having picked up encouraging draws against Chesham United and Frome Town in their last two Evo-Stik Southern Premier games, Hemel were clearly keen to make a positive start but their enthusiasm soon saw Warren Goodhind enter the referee’s notebook for a poor challenge on Sam Malsom.

Even after that the frenetic nature of the contest refused to let up and on 10 minutes it culminated in the sending off of Gorman for a lunging challenge on Ben Gerring.

Matt Foley, the man in the middle, had no other choice but to brandish the red card and Weymouth soon went about trying to make their extra man count.

However, the first meaningful effort of the game did not come until the 23-minute mark when Byron Napper and Warren Byerley combined to set up Jamie Beasley. He dribbled the ball past Goodhind but could only send his shot over the top.

Cambridge United loanee Jack Eades replaced Ryan Blake moments later in a tactical switch for the hosts but the Terras continued pressing with Byerley heading just wide following a great cross from Stephen Reed.

Ryan O’Hara then sent a gilt-edged effort off target at the other end following some indecisive defending.

The ball appeared to land at his feet perfectly, following Josh Scowen’s deflected shot, but somehow the winger fired the ball wide despite only being a few yards out.

That was a huge warning sign for the Terras and it clearly rattled them as just moments later the hosts went close again when Ross Lafayette sent a free header off target following good work from Eades.

Hemel now suddenly looked full of confidence but after Lafayette had nodded over another opportunity, Weymouth responded with Sam Poole having a shot deflected out for a corner after Reed’s free-kick had caused panic in the box.

The clash had certainly opened up and on 43 minutes the home side wasted another golden chance when Lafayette weaved through the Terras’ defence and cut the ball back to Lewis Toomey, who fired wide with only keeper Tom Manley to beat.

The half then eventually closed with Beasley sending over a cross for Byerley, whose effort was superbly kept out at the near post by Hemel number one Nick Bussey.

The end-to-end nature of the contest continued after the break with Toomey forcing a fine save out of Manley before a handball incident at the other end provided the Terras with the perfect chance to take the lead from the spot on 50 minutes.

Byerley stepped up and made no mistake, sending Bussey the wrong way with a cool spot-kick to bring up his 14th goal of the season in all competitions.

To their credit though, the Tudors immediately responded and were unfortunate not to level just two minutes later when Lafayette played in Toomey, whose 20-yard strike brought a full-length save out of the impressive Manley.

Lafayette was then surprisingly replaced by Marvin Williams close to the hour before Matt Groves scrambled home Weymouth’s second on 66 minutes after Byerley had seen his 30-yard strike tipped on to the crossbar.

There now looked no way back for Hemel but just two minutes later they grabbed a lifeline when Toomey found Scowen, who drilled the ball home from eight yards.

With their tails firmly up again, the Tudors kept pressing and after a succession of corners they nearly equalised when Manley did well to recover after spilling a cross under pressure from Williams.

Eades then curled an effort wide from the edge of the box as Wey-mouth continued to desperately hold on.

A bombardment of corners then saw Matt McEntegart head over from five yards before Manley was forced into a brave save from Williams, which unfortunately left the keeper injured.

That meant Povall had to come into the action in the final few minutes as Weymouth eventually saw out the onslaught to claim their third consecutive league victory on the road.
