Terras’ boss hails his side after stern test
By Adam Summers

TERRAS’ boss Brendon King was “over the moon” with his squad’s first pre-season run out against Npower League Two side Gillingham.

A single goal from ex-Leeds United midfielder Curtis Weston on 33 minutes was the only thing that separated the two teams at the Bob Lucas Stadium as Weymouth put up a steely defensive display against a strong Gills’ outfit, which also included new signings Andy Frampton, Lewis Montrose and Danny Kedwell.

King said: “There were some good performances out there and to be honest I am over the moon.

“The aim was to be competitive and I think we more than held our own against a very strong side.

“We knew they would keep the ball for long periods but we set out with two solid banks of four and made life difficult for them.

“They were always going to create chances and on another day it might have been three or four but our fitness was good and we kept closing down right to the end.

“Understandably, we were a bit rusty in certain areas but to put on such an encouraging display in our first outing of the summer against a full-time pro side that came into the game having played three friendlies already was very pleasing.”

King was particularly impressed with young defender Sam Poole, who is hoping to make the step up this season from the club’s reserve team.

He added: “I thought Sam was outstanding. He started at right-back and then went into the centre in the second half and to perform the way he did against such experienced opposition was tremendous.

“He had a very good season for the reserves last year and if he continues making progress the way he is at the moment there is no reason why he cannot push for a first-team place.

“I also thought Richard Marshall-say was superb and there were encouraging signs from a few of the trialists as well.

“It is hard to judge players when you are playing against a League side because for a lot of the game you are without the ball but I thought Kyle Bassett looked sharp and Tom Lang did okay at the back.

“Peter Knox also came on in the second half and we are hoping to take another look at him on Wednesday when we host Eastleigh (7.45pm).”

The Terras also handed a cameo appearance to former striker David Laws, who unveiled a plaque before kick-off to officially mark the renaming of the ground in honour of late lifetime president Bob Lucas.

King said: “Lawsy is a club legend and it was great to be able to give him a little cameo. I was half expecting him to go on and score but it was fantastic he was able to come down and do his bit for the club and I would like to thank him very much.”

One player that was absent from the clash was midfielder Rob Wolleaston, who is still renegotiating the terms of his contract.

King added: “Rob has a bit of a cold about him at the moment so I told him not to travel down as we do not want to run the risk of it spreading around the changing room.”
