Weymouth sunk by Sandy
By Adam Summers
THE Terras saw their four-match unbeaten league run come to
an end despite the heroics of keeper Nick Jordan.
The Weymouth stopper made several top-class saves to keep his
side in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier clash but Elliot Sandys
first-half strike was enough to see a vastly experienced Brackley
outfit march home with all three points, as they stretched their
clean sheet record to a staggering six successive games.
Due to suspensions, boss Brendon King was forced to make two
changes to his Terras starting XI with Jamie Frampton
and Jamie Beasley coming in for Sam Poole and Craig Duff.
Jordan also continued between the posts in the absence of Tom
Manley, who was also serving a ban, while new signing Chris
Luke was included on the bench having recently signed dual registration
forms from Sherborne Town.
There was also a familiar face in the Brackley squad where ex-Terra
Jefferson Louis was named among the substitutes.
With both teams entering the game in fine form a classic looked
on the cards at kick-off and the opening exchanges reflected
that.
Tom Winters stung the palms of Jordan with a 16-yard effort
on five minutes before Sam Malsoms volleyed cross at the
other end was headed away from inside the six-yard box by Josh
Green.
Both teams looked anxious at the back and moments later a lapse
in concentration from Weymouth saw Steve Diggin presented with
a clear sight of goal but his wild strike flew well wide of
the near post.
The same player then just failed to get on the end of a delicious
cross from Owen Storey before Terras forward Warren Byerley
did likewise after fine build-up play from Stephen Reed, Malsom
and Matt Groves.
Although both teams were enjoying good spells of possession
it was the visitors that were getting behind the home defence
more often and on 15 minutes they nearly took full advantage
when Jordan did well to keep out a shot from Elliot Sandy, who
then struck another effort over the bar after a misjudgement
from Frampton.
The Terras were clearly riding their luck and they escaped another
bullet on 26 minutes when James Cliftons cross-field ball
caught Scott Dixon on his heels but Storey was unable to profit
as his shot trickled wide under pressure from Jordan.
The Weymouth keeper was certainly being tested and moments later
he blocked a header from Diggin with his chest before Winters
follow-up attempt cannoned off the crossbar.
Brackley deserved to be at least a couple up so it was no surprise
when the breakthrough finally arrived on the half hour.
A high ball into the area saw Diggin turn Frampton far too easily
before coolly laying the ball across the six-yard box for Sandy
to tap in the simplest of finishes.
The Saints were now full of confidence and they would have doubled
their lead three minutes later had Jordan not pulled off another
top-class save to his right to parry away another clear opportunity
for Storey.
Struggling to get out of their own half the Terras desperately
needed a lift but even when Beasley and Malsom both suddenly
sprang to life, no one was able to get on the end of the latters
teasing cross into the box.
Reed then saw a free-kick comfortably saved by Paul Walker but
apart from that the Brackley stopper had been a spectator for
much of the half.
Lucky to still be in the game, Weymouth came out after the break
looking a little sharper but on 55 minutes they were forced
to reshuffle the pack after Ben Gerring had to come off due
to a foot injury.
Richard Marshallsay came on in his place with the impressive
Byron Napper dropping to centre-back alongside Frampton.
Malsom drove a 20-yard shot at Walker shortly after before Mars-hallsay
headed over a corner from Reed on 64 minutes as the hosts started
to find some rhythm for the first time in the game. The Saints
on the other hand were looking a shadow of the team that dominated
the first half although Green did volley a great chance over
the bar two minutes later that would have surely put the result
beyond doubt.
Mitch Conning and Ryan McKech-nie replaced Beasley and Dixon,
and Louis came on for Sandy as both managers attempted to pep
up their sides in the closing stages and it was Town that created
the late chances, with Louis and Winters both being denied by
five saves from the sensational Jordan.
Malsom had a volley blocked as Weymouth applied some last-ditch
pressure but the Saints eventually held on for a well-deserved
victory.
* A minutes silence was held before kick-off in honour
of loyal supporters Ivor Maley and Scott Mutter, who both sadly
passed away earlier in the week. |
