Terras' woe at Worcester
By Nigel Biddlecombe
WEYMOUTH were cast further adrift at the bottom of the Blue
Square South after succumbing to fellow strugglers Worcester.
Despite taking an early lead and bossing the opening
periods of both halves the Terras, under the stewardship
of caretaker-boss Andy Harris, slipped to another defeat at
St Georges Lane.
Within the first minute Cam-bridge United loanee Ben Farrell
combined with Stephen Reed to put Simon Radcliffe in space.
Radcliffes cross found Jake Reid, but the returning
striker blazed his shot over the bar.
Moments later Farrell found Reid with a ball that left the
Worcester defence in tatters, but again the Terras striker
fired well off target.
The home sides first charge towards the Terras
goal saw Marco Adaggio cross for Marc McGregor to head goalwards,
however, Ryan Harrison was able to gather the ball on the
second attempt.
Reed fired wide from 30 yards before the Terras took an eighth
minute lead that that their efforts deserved. Matt Groves
controlled Jamie McGuinness cross from the left before
laying the ball into the path of Farrell. The debutants
shot from just outside the penalty area took a deflection
before entering the net. This success gave the visitors confidence
and they certainly controlled the play for the next 10-15
minutes, but the battling home side ensured that the control
could not be converted into clear chances.
Having weathered the storm, City came back into the game
with McGregor shooting wide, Scott Brice producing a brilliant
challenge to deny Rob Davies and then putting his body in
the path of Matt Birleys 25-yard effort.
Reid did manage to find some space to latch on to a long
clearance and fire a snapshot, but the ball ran harmlessly
past an upright.
Simon Radcliffe used his body to block another Davies effort
as the home side began to take control, with the Terras defending
far too deep to really relieve the pressure.
McGregor somehow managed to head over the crossbar from six
yards and a five-man passing move by Worcester ended when
Adaggio stubbed his effort wide of a post.
Weymouth were seemingly unable to work the ball clear of
their danger area as the home side took control, using their
five-man midfield to full advantage.
Tom Kemps weak effort was comfortably held by Harrison,
but the Terras keeper was forced to produce the save
of the match when he turned Alfie Carters drive past
his left-hand upright on the stroke of half-time.
Unfortunately Graham Wards cross from Davies
short corner was not dealt with, allowing Adaggio to head
home, via an upright.
Weymouth started the second period brightly, but were restricted
to shooting from distance. Reid, Reed, Farrell and Groves
all seeing efforts miss the target before the home side once
again regained control.
McGregor should have put the home side in front on 77 minutes
when he found himself free on the six-yard line, but his downward
header bounced over the crossbar and Adaggio missed a similar
chance when Harrison tipped his effort over the top.
However, the Terras did fall behind from the resulting corner
when Wards cross was allowed to go across the penalty
area unchallenged allowing Kemp to power his header home.
A minute later Jordan Rose cleverly played his way past Ward,
but sent his shot well over the crossbar, but it was the home
side who wrapped the game up with their next foray into the
visitors terri-tory.
Once again Weymouth failed to deal with a cross, this time
from Carter, and Adaggio had a simple task of netting his
second at the far post.
Pierre Joseph-Dubois was given the chance to fire in a shot
after Reed had taken advantage of a poor clearance by Craig
Wilding only to see Wayne Daniel clear off the line with keeper
Jake Meredith beaten.
As the game drew to a close the small group of Weymouth fans
gathered behind Merediths goal who had backed
the team throughout the game vented their frustration
at recent events with a chorus of Ian Hutchinsons
Claret and Blue Army that continued well after the Terras
men had left the field.
