Cards have too many tricks for Terras
By Nigel Biddlecombe
WEYMOUTHS turbulent season came to a close with a resounding
defeat at the Kingfield Stadium.
The already relegated Terras made one change for the visit
to high-flying Woking with Ben Farrell replacing the suspended
Stephen Reed.
Within three minutes of the start the Cards had boosted their
chances of a play-off place and Weymouth had conceded
their 100th goal of the season.
Farrell failed to control a pass from Ollie Tribe allowing
Giuseppe Sole to intercept and play Craig Faulconbridge in
on the edge of the area with Cameron Mawer relieving
the pressure at the expense of a corner.
Keeper Michael Neish was unable to hold Nicky Nicolaus
in-swinging kick which slipped through his hands before hitting
Faulconbridge and rebounding into the net.
Woking added a second on 13th minutes when Sole started a
move which included five of his team- mates before drilling
home from 20 yards.
Neish held on to Faulconbridges cross before the Terras
first tested the home defence Farrell and Scott Dixon
combined to put Simon Radcliffe free on the left, but home
keeper Ross Werner easily grabbed the skippers cross.
Rob Nicholls dispossessed Sole in midfield finding Jamie
McGuin-ness, but the Weymouth man was a little optimistic
as his 30-yard effort flew over the bar.
Tom Hutchinson headed wide from an Aswad Thomas free-kick
before the large crowd was treated to the miss of the season.
Mark Ricketts cleverly found Ricky Anane on the left allowing
the full-back to cut in and play the ball to the feet of Matthew
Wright, standing just four yards from goal.
Somehow the home man managed to place his shot wide of the
far post, but saw his embarrassment alleviated by an offside
flag.
In first half stoppage time Carl Foster created an opening
for Nicholls, but the youngster rushed his shot and fired
wide, while at the other end Jamie Frampton was on hand to
clear Faulconbridges header off the line.
The home side came out for the second half looking to put
the game to bed with Hutchinson again heading high and Neish
producing a great save when diving to his left to palm away
a deflected shot from Moses Ademola.
The referee stunned everyone when he adjudged Warner to have
picked up a back pass which appeared to have been a through
ball from Evans, but McGuinness having received Dixons
free-kick fired into the defensive wall.
Woking were making all the running Faulconbridge forcing
a save from Neish and then headed a cross from Nicolau high
and the Terras cleared a corner from under the cross bar.
The Cards third goal was as good as any I have seen
this season as they put together 12 passes before Ricketts
played a ball into the area, Ademola helped it on leaving
Nico-lau a simple tap-in, with 15 minutes left.
With the game now well beyond them the Terras played the
role of King Canute trying to stop the tide
as the home side, cheered on by more than 2,000 fans, pushed
forward looking to boost their goal difference, but were let
down by poor finishing.
Hutchinson cleared the crossbar from six yards, Ademola mis-kicked
with the goal at his mercy and Nicolau shot wide from 15 yards.
With the game in added time Woking did add a fourth when
Hutchinsons long boot upfield cleared the Terras
defence, allowing Ademola to slip in before a hesitant Neish
and slot home.
There was barely time for the restart, but caretaker-manager
Andy Harris on for a cameo appearance as substitute
nearly had the last word when he received the ball
and tried an audacious shot from all of 50 yards. With Werner
struggling to regain his position the ball eventually dropped
harmlessly over the cross bar.
In all honesty this was probably one match too far for the
young Terras, but the result cannot take anything away from
the effort they have put in to keep the name of Weymouth Football
Club alive in very difficult times.
