Terras suffer smash and grab
By Derek Bish
RELEGATED Weymouths basement battle with Weston-super-Mare
ended in disgrace after visiting captain Mike Green was attacked
by a supporter at the final whistle.
The scenes that followed were just as unsavoury with stewards,
players and club officials among those involved in a mass
brawl that resulted with double goalscorer Jermaine Clarke
receiving a post-match red card.
The game that preceded between the divisions two bottom
sides saw substitute Tom Richardson score with his first touch,
before Clarke turned the game on its head inside the final
two minutes.
Teenage goalkeeper Michael Neish came into the side for his
debut after Tim Sandercombe injured himself playing for Exeter
City Reserves while Scott Dixon was also unavailable and replaced
by Rushden & Diamonds loanee Jamie McGuinness, who
returned after a virus.
The absence of Dixon meant a switch in positions for skipper
Simon Radcliffe, who moved to left-back, and John Lamb, who
operated from the left flank instead of the right.
It took just 46 seconds for the visitors Danny Burnell
to fire the first warning shot, rippling the side of the net
with a volley after a poor clearance from Jamie Frampton but
it was the latter who really should have opened the scoring.
Frampton peeled away from his marker at the back post but
could not get a clean contact on Stephen Reeds left-wing
free-kick to guide it into the net, instead glancing harmlessly
wide.
Shane Evans went even closer to netting his first Terras
goal, also with his head, but the ex-Bridport striker only
guided McGuinness delicious cross on to the crossbar.
Less than a minute later, the home side were granted a lifeline
by the assistant when Weston had a goal ruled out for offside
after Ben Cleverleys deep free-kick had been bundled
past Neish.
Reeds angled ball from deep was just clung on to by
visiting custodian Kevin Sawyer while another excellent cross
by McGuin-ness deserved better than a complete miss-hit by
Evans.
Both sides were struggling to impose themselves on the game
and all Weston had to offer in reply was a wayward long-range
strike from Burnell, another from the same player that deflected
just beyond the crossbar and Clarkes dragged shot that
was never likely to test Neish.
Man mountain Clayton Fortune finally had the games
first effort on target six minutes after the break, but Neish
scrambled across to hold the midfielders low, skidding
effort.
At the other end, Nicholls screwed wide from 25 yards while
the Terras first on-target attempt was a poorly-executed
45-yard lob from Reed.
However, a substitution from caretaker-boss Andy Harris made
all the difference as Richardson came off the bench to score
with his first touch.
Lamb showed great heart to win possession and find Radcliffe
on the left and the captain swung over a perfect cross that
was inviting a finish, which Richardson provided from inside
the six-yard box.
The visitors nearly responded immediately but bundled wide
from a corner and Burnell went close once again, thumping
the crossbar from 25 yards with his last action before being
somewhat harshly replaced by Jake Harris.
Reed stung the hands of Sawyer from the right corner of the
penalty area and Lamb, who was much improved after the break,
shot wide from the opposite angle of the box after a surging
run by Robin Nicholls.
On-loan Macclesfield midfielder Reed almost received a massive
slice of luck but his free-kick deflected narrowly wide past
a static Sawyer and the same player tried his luck again,
forcing Sawyer to spill his fierce drive before the custodian
fell on it.
However, the Terras were to throw away the advantage they
had done so well to gain when they failed to clear and Clarke
hooked in from just eight yards.
A point would have still relegated Weston-super-Mare but
they gave themselves a stay of execution when Weymouth again
failed to clear and Clarke was on hand once more to lift his
header over Neish.
The final whistle was greeted with frustration, none more
so than by one particular fan who ran onto the pitch to confront
Green, and Clarkes day took a turn for the worst when
the referee brandished a red card for his part in the post-match
nastiness.
