Terras shot down
By Derek Bish
WEYMOUTH will be glad to see the back of Eastleigh this season
after the Spitfires destroyed the Terras for the second time
this season and took their goal tally against them to nine this
campaign.
Richard Gillespie scored twice inside the opening seven minutes
before Tom Jordan added his own brace with headers just shy
of 30 minutes and then again on the hour mark.
Manager Jerry Gill included new signings Lewis Whitehead
and Luke Benbow on the substitutes bench with the latter
looking pretty handy in the 23 minutes he had to make his
mark.
As expected, the Terras boss sacrificed winger Matt
Groves in favour of another central midfielder the
Terras only change from the 3-1 win at home to Lewes
on Saturday.
Player/assistant-manager Andy Harris, who used to play for
the Spitfires, was the man chosen to fill that role, while
ex-Terras Jason Matthews and Tony Taggart lined up for the
home side with another former Weymouth man on the bench in
the form of Josh Webb.
The visitors got off to the worst start possible when they
failed to defend a long clearance from Matthews, allowing
Gillespie to turn the Weymouth back four and round Ryan Harrison
far too easily before calmly slotting into the empty net.
That start became even more of a nightmare for Weymouth and
much more of a dream for Gillespie when the Spitfires
number nine, hardly the tallest of forwards, scored his second
in the space of four minutes with a header.
The prolific ex-Bashley striker was allowed too much space
in the penalty area and confidently powered Shaun McAuleys
right-wing cross into the bottom right-hand corner, despite
the best efforts of Harrison who could only get a hand to
the ball and help it on its way into the net.
Steve Cook could and possibly should have made it 3-0 but
shot wide from a good position while Andy Forbes got the better
of Scott Bennett but could only volley at Harrison from range.
Harris hit a 30-yard free-kick into the arms of Matthews
but Weymouth were struggling to create anything meaningful
from open play and suffered once again when Eastleigh attacked.
Harrison was caught at his front post for McAuleys
left-wing corner and Spitfires skipper Jordan leapt
inside the six-yard box and headed down into the net.
The Terras finally came to life when Eastleigh switched off
at the back and Ben Farrell ghosted in behind, but Matthews
got just enough of a touch on the on-loan midfielders
guided effort to put it behind for a corner.
Martin Slocombe had a header cleared off the line from the
resulting corner before Farrell blazed over when well placed
to net.
Peter Adeniyi slammed in what would have been a superb fourth
on the stroke of half-time but it was ruled out for handball
while three minutes the other side of the break, McAuley got
the better of two players but fired over.
Jake Reid set his sights from 25 yards but shot wide while
Harrison got caught again but Bennett stopped Gillespie getting
his hat-trick by clearing off the line.
But that only delayed further embarrassment for the Terras
goalkeeper, when Jordan got the better of him from McAuleys
right-wing corner and scored.
Danny Smith volleyed tamely into Harrisons hands soon
after while Josh Llewellyn missed a glorious chance at the
other end to give the travelling Terras fans something
small to cheer about.
Taggart beat several wild Weymouth challenges before shooting
wide from close-range before Harrison made three comfortable
saves in the final 10 minutes.
Stephen Reed nearly grabbed a late one for Weymouth from
a free-kick but Matthews made a decent stop.
