Terras suffer cup calamity
By Nigel Biddlecombe
WEYMOUTH slipped incongruously out of the FA Cup at the first
hurdle, as they lost to Zamaretto League Division One S&W
strugglers Bishops Cleeve.
To add to the beleaguered clubs misery midfielder Jordan
Rose was sent off five minutes from time after collecting
two yellow cards within a minute.
Manager Matty Hale made three changes to the side that lost
last weekend to St Albans. Kyle Crit-chell, Chris Allen and
Joe Arnold all being absent, with the manager bringing Matt
Townley, Matt Groves and himself into the starting line-up.
With Matty Bound also unavailable, due to a rib injury, the
Terras were left with only four men on the bench, including
young reserve player Ollie Tribe.
In Critchells absence Andy Har-ris took the captains
armband, but he had to pass this to Scott Brice when he left
the field injured shortly before the interval.
Weymouth started brightly enough as Harris fed Andy Caton,
but the youngster delayed his shot just long enough to allow
John Cant to clear at the expense of a corner.
The home side showed that they would not be overawed when,
in the fourth minute. James Vercesi worked an opening, but
his shot was deflected for a corner.
From the kick Terras keeper Ryan Harrison had to be
alert to tip Adam Mayos close range header over the
crossbar.
When Hales ninth minute free-kick was allowed to go
right across the home penalty area it looked as if Sam Avery
controlled the ball with his arm before clearing, but nothing
was given.
Harrison was forced to save Kevin Slacks 25-yard effort
as the visitors failed to clear after a long throw from Ben
Gascoyne caused problems in the visitors defence.
Weymouth were a little unlucky not to take the lead in the
22nd minute when both Matt Cooper and Caton saw their efforts
blocked by the home defence, a similar fate befalling Matt
Groves a few minutes later.
The hosts took the lead in the 33rd minute when another long
throw this time from Slack was not cleared and
Gascoyne hooked the ball over the static figure of Harrison
and into the net.
Weymouths injury problems increased when in the 40th
minute Harris and Vercesi both went for a loose ball leaving
the Terras skipper writhing in agony.
Then deep into added time Harr-ison made a mess of a kick
and the lively Slack was on hand to glee-fully double the
home sides advantage.
Weymouth replaced Harrison with Simon Evans at the interval
and again started well with Brice and Hale combining to present
Caton with a good opportunity, but he was comprehensively
outmuscled by Steve Jones allowing home keeper Tom King to
gather.
In the 62nd minute Slack ended the game as a contest when
he shrugged off a poor challenge from Townley to drive home.
Within a couple of minutes the same player should have added
a fourth, but he managed to shoot well over the crossbar with
only Evans to beat.
Weymouth looked to have pulled a goal back after 67 minutes
when Townleys free-kick was allowed to fly through a
crowd of players only for Cant to head clear from under his
own crossbar.
With the Terras having pushed players up Slack collected
from Cants header and make a lot of ground before again
shooting off target.
As the match drew to a conclusion Weymouth had chances to
pull a goal back. Firstly Rose headed weakly into Kings
hands from Ian Hutchinsons free-kick and Caton failed
to reach Hales cross after Brice and Hutchinson had
given the player-manager a chance to run at the home defence.
For the home side Vercesis last action of the match
brought a smart diving save from Evans, while the substitute
goalkeeper was well placed to hold on to a header from Gareth
Hopkins.
There was one further nail to be hammered into Weymouths
coffin before the match ended as Rose was penalised and cautioned
for a foul on Richard Mansell in the 84th minute.
Sam Avery found Mansell with the resulting free-kick, wide
out on the right, only for Rose to launch himself at the Bishops
man with a two-footed tackle.
The Terras substitute was lucky to escape with a second
caution and subsequent dismissal rather than the straight
red card the challenge deserved.
Both keepers were called upon to make a couple of comfortable
saves before the referee brought an afternoon of suffering
to an end for Weymouth, leaving Cleeve to celebrate a well
deserved win.
